Bird and Monarch Watching, Point Pelee National Park, Lake Erie, Ontario

Point Pelee is the most southern point on the Canadian mainland. It attracts thousands of migrant birds and Monarch Butterflies each year before they cross Lake Erie on their long journey south or come north in Spring. There is group camping, hiking, trail walking over marshes, cycling, bird watching.

Point Pelee is just west of Wheatly Provincial Park and not far from the U.S. border at Windsor/Detroit.

You enter from Leamington and head south. There are some great boardwalks over marshes that are quite interesting. Further south is a Interpretive Center with all the information about the park and the flights, etc. They keep track of when the best sighting times are.

From this center you can take a road train to the tip and get off and wander to look for birds or butterflies on trails through the Carolinian woods. You will be able to see the point of sand that is the very tip of the point.

The train will return and take you back to the center. There are also nice picnic areas and beaches all along the way and at the end.

If you want to go to Pelee Island you can go on a boat from Leamington. I have not been there but know it is very interesting as well.

I have found some nice sites with pictures about Point Pelee so hope you will click on them and see the scenery.
