Birds and Butterflies on Lake Erie
I live on the north shore of Lake Erie right on the flight path of many birds and butterflies. I don't have any pictures. The Tundra or Whistling swans were here until last week and left as soon as the ice melted. It is such a treat to hear and see them. The Bird Banding Station at Long Point just banded it's 750,000th bird with a gold band to celebrate this occasion. People can go here and watch when they take birds from nets set in trees and weigh and inspect them. If they already have bands they are noted with all the travel information. New bands are added and then they are released to continue their flight. The Monarch Butterflies are numerous around the end of August as they fly along the lake westward to Point Pellee and rest before crossing Lake Erie to go south. It is so nice to see them in the evening sleeping where there are purple wildflowers and Milkweed. Their biggest enemies is a moving vehicle which accidentally kills many of them. So sad to see them on the road. Bird Watchers come to Long Point from all over the world to see the many birds at The World Biosphere area and large new building with much to view.
