Blueberry Picking Time
As I was out on one of my little travels today I saw that they are now picking Blueberries near my home. I always go every year and get a supply to freeze. Blueberries are at their peak in mid July but picking lasts for quite some time. They are very easy to pick and it can be a nice family outing. Some places even have play areas for the children but they can easily pick them too. The bushes are about four feet high so this eliminates the need to bend over as with Strawberries. Most places lend you a bucket with a rope to tie around your waist so both hands can be busy clipping off the berries. Of course, as with all fruits, half the fun is in the sampling as you pick. It doesn't take long to fill a bucket. Be sure to wear a hat as you will be in the direct sun. Most places sell them if you so desire and may have other items made from Blueberries as well. Once you are home all you do is put them in little freezer containers. You wash them when you take them out for use and that will have them thawed out in a couple minutes. They are good to use in a lot of baking items like muffins, cakes, pies, jam, etc. Blueberries have a lot of wonderful vitamins that we all need and also anti aging properties and Cancer prevention qualities. In other words they are great to eat and great for our health. They are nice to eat just plain or maybe on some ice cream. I must finish off the few I have from last year and then go picking soon.
