Canada's Forest Capital 2008
Every year an area in Canada is designated as The Forest Capital of Canada. This is to focus on the role forests play in the environmental health of communities. Norfolk County, which goes north from Lake Erie at Long Point, is one of the oldest counties in SW Ontario. When it was settled by pioneers the forests were something that had to be cleared to plant their crops and get deeds to their property. This area is very sandy soil and sometimes would not support the crops. Much of the sand started to blow away. The settlers then turned to logging to earn money and much of the lumber was sent to the USA. Once the trees were gone the land became like an arid desert-like area. Some local people worked with the Ontario Government to make the area into a nursery that would supply free seedlings to farmers who wished to plant them on their lands. This was called The St. Willams Forestry Station. It was run for a hundred years and this is the centennial. Our local Historical Assoc. helped refurbish a building their and has made it into an Interpretive Centre where students and tourists, etc. can go and learn about this historical happening. Today Norfolk County is one of the most heavily forested area in southern Ontario, and that is why it has been honoured to be called The Forest Capital of Canada 2008. It is especially lovely in the Autumn when these trees are in colour. Many are species found only in this area, The Carolinian Forest. If you live anywhere near here there will be special events all year long to go along with the Forest history. Hope you can attend and enjoy yourself Shirley Manion |
