Fire Prevention Tips

Having a fire can be one of the most devestating times of your life. I have never actually been in a burning building, but have had buildings burn. We lost an entire store and all its contents. Not one thing was saved. At least no one was in the place at the time.

There are fire hazards that people are not aware of. One night we were sitting in the den when our cat acted odd and went into the kitchen. Flames were coming from a silk scarf that had been hung above an electrical outlet. It had touched the place where the plug was not entirely into the wall. Kitty saved us that time. Just realize that this can be dangerous and keep plugs in tightly or don't have articles by them.

Just a few weeks ago an apartment near here started on fire. The cause was a curtain that had blown onto a lamp. Touch a lamp that is on and you will see how hot it gets.

When my son was a toddler he pulled a sofa cushion off and leaned it against one of those small portable heaters. It didn't start a flame but had a nice black hole in it. I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been watching? These heaters are very dangerous if not watched and material goes over them.

Gas firepaces or woodstoves or stoves can be dangerous if someone falls against them. Teach children to stay back.

Woodstoves were very popular here several years ago, but now most insurance cos. don't want them. They must be watched and the chimney cleared of Creasote.

Stoves should also be monitored to make sure no paper or cloth has been left on them. Don't leave food on high unattended.

Of course, there are more things than this. These may be some you have not thought about.

And make sure to check your fire detectors plura.
