Gardening, Annuals

Some people love to have a great variety of Perennials that come up every year and they are a grand delight.

My family were always Annual people. We wait patiently for the 24th of May to make sure the threat of frost is over (in Ontario that is) and then start planting.

I like to make a new design and new color of garden each year. This year I chose all red. I planted one flat of little Begonias under a tree on the front yard. They always do well in the shade and look good there. You need to have a lot for a good showing and not much rain goes there so water is needed more often. Lost year I had pink and white in the same place.

In another garden we have Roses at the back and then add Annuals in front. I put all red Coleus for a change and they have pretty leaves but not flowers. You can also get various colors which are pretty, but I couldn't find any this year.

Last year I had Petunias and Marigolds. These are lovely but plan to spend time every day deadheading them. This means to take off the flowers that have bloomed. Usually cutting is best so you don't rip off the good ones too. I do this with all my plants including the Roses. This way they are only working to make more flowers and not seeds.

Another choice is mixed colors and they look nice and colorful. Some may wonder why a person would plant white flowers. Well, they really set off the colors or those beside them.

Make sure to water as soon as you plant them and get some flowering fertilizer. You can actually see them grow within a few hours after being freed from those little boxes they come in.

Landfill sites are full of old containers and some Nurseries are now taking them back or some people that start their own plants would likely make use of them.

See the pictures below of some gardens in Stratford, Ontario where they usually win Canada gardening prizes. Of course, being a tourist area they hire gardening students or professionals to design the gardens.

Going on local garden tours is a great way to spend a day and you will find that a lot of the fabulous gardens are in the backs of the houses.

Contributor's Note

Get out and plant some Annuals this weekend even if only in a flowerpot or flower box on a patio. You will enjoy them all Summer and into the Fall.
