Gramaphones
Once I was a Gramophone collector and found it quite interesting. It was only about 100 yrs. ago when these were first invented and Thomas Alva Edison was one the very intelligent people who started it all. The earliest were called Graphophones and used cylinders about six inches long and about three inch diameter. Unfortunately, these are very fragile and if a person is lucky enough to still have some they can break easily. The Gramophone came about in the early 1900's and used large breakable records. You had to wind the crank to get the spring wound up and then the sound came out of a large speaker horn on the top. The needles had to be changed often. Many of the records were comical as well as musical. My father said his brothers got one and had one record they played over and over. We were lucky to get a stand that was hanging in a man's garage. It was a dark almost black finish. We had it refinished and it was a lovely oak wood. The front door opened and had slots with felt that held about 100 records. The Gramophone sat on the top. Unfortunately, nowadays these things are copied and you have to be careful when buying any type of antiques. Edison traveled around quite a bit. He worked in Stratford, Ontario for the railroad at one time. He used to come to a little town on the north shore of Lake Erie called Vienna to visit his grandparents and the people there have a museum called The Edison Museum that has many Edison items.
