Keeping Cool

With a current hot spell where I live it reminds me of how we kept cool in the past. When I was young there was no air conditioning in houses or cars, but we did survive. I actually have never had air conditioning even when I lived in south Florida.

It helps if your house is well insulated. We have windows on two sides. At night we close all the blinds and curtains and keep the sunny side closed as the day goes on and vice versa. Around supper time we open all available windows and let the air circulate. Some can be left open all night if in a good location.

Once it starts to warm up in the morning these are all closed and the cool air from outside at night is still in the house.

Later in the day a fan may be needed. Ceiling fan is good and the large breeze box or one that goes back and forth are all good choices.

For just yourself even a paper or magazine can cool you off. I got a little bamboo fan that I have at my computer and it works ok too.

Once it cools off at night we always sat outside as did all the neighbors. I let my kids stay up until it cooled off as it was too hard for them to sleep in a hot house.

My car AC failed just after I bought it and it just costs too much to repair. I know where all the shaded parking places are and head for them. When parking I put one of those window shades in the front and even sides.

I drive on back roads as there are trees that give the road shade. Because it is a van I keep at least one back window ajar so the air can pass through.

Of course going to a beach or swimming pool are great helpers.

For kids a little cheap blow-up pool can be great or the garden hose is lots of fun to. They love those new splash pad places or water parks.

Wearing nice cool clothes is fine but I always take a cover up if I am going to stores or other inside places who might have the AC turned up too high.

Hope these little tips will help you keep cool and save on that climbing energy bill.

Living by Lake Erie helps as it is always cooler and we know if we go away from the lake it will be hotter.

Contributor's Note

Hope you can keep cool even if it is only in a nice cool shower
