Lake Erie Lighthouse and Port Burwell
Have you ever wanted to climb to the top of a lighthouse? Well, you can in Canada's oldest wooden lighthouse at Port Burwell, Ontario. If you ever watched the series "Friday The Thirteenth" several years back you would have seen this lighthouse and the old sea captain falling from the top. It was interesting to see this being filmed at the time. Across the street is a Marine Museum that has a collection of lighthouse lamps from the past and many other nautical items. Fishing boats can be seen in the harbour and Perch and Pickerel fishing is good here (so are the dinners at the local eating places). This is a quiet tourist town now with a great sand beach and Provincial Park. In the past it was a thriving shipping harbour. Logging was done and the logs shipped out. Much coal was used in the past. The Ashtabula was a ship that brought coal from Ashtabula, Ohio on freight cars. There was a turntable on the docks area and then the train cars went back on the ship and across the lake to get some more. There are people on both sides of the lake working now on getting a large boat to take everything from cars to trucks across the lake again. This would take much of the traffic that is jamming the bridges at Detroit and Buffalo. If you are ever driving along Lake Erie be sure to stop and visit Port Burwell. You will also see windmills all along the hills as well.
