The Great Lakes, Superior
Lake Superior is the largest of The Great Lakes. It is also the largest (by surface area) freshwater lake in the world at 31,820 sq. miles surface area. It is also the coldest of The Great Lakes at from 32 to 55 F or 0 to 13 C. It has very large waves and can be a dangerous lake. Lake Superior is bordered by Ontario, Canada and Minnesota, U.S.A. on the north. On the south is Wisconsin and Michigan, U.S.A. It is the furthest west of The Great Lakes and Duluth, Minnesota is the last or most inland port of The St. Lawrence Seaway System. The Indian name for this lake was Gichigami or "big water". It can also be known as Gitche Gumee as it was called in a popular song "The Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. Many ships have been sunk on this blustery lake. I have never been lucky enough to travel to this area, but do know it is quite cold in winter and not heavily populated except in the cities and ports. You can find much more information at the Wikipedia link I have included.
