Victoria Day
Victoria Day was originally celebrated as The Queen's Birthday and it is still known for this. When I was a kid we always sang a cute little song: "The 24th of May is The Queen's Birthday and if we don't get a holiday we'll all run away". I don't know if kids sing this nowadays. The weekend is always the one before the 24th of May. It has, however, become the start of Canada's Summer Season. Many people, especially teens and younger folks, head for the water. It is the time to get out the tents, trailers, boats and swimming gear. Even though the beaches will be quite cool some will try a swim or just want to bask in the sun. It is usually not that warm but no one really cares. It is a time to celebrate and maybe have a parade or some fireworks. Others will take the chance that frost is past and spend much time planting Annuals in their gardens. Nurseries will be very busy. In some parts of Canada, the holiday is colloquially known as May Two-Four. This phrase has two meanings: the holiday always falls near the date of May 24, and a two-four is Canadian slang for a case of 24 bottles of beer, a common packaging of the drink in Canada (and a common purchase of those planning to celebrate the weekend). Actually, our Provincial Parks in Ontario ban liquor on this weekend because of problems in the past.
